Wounds by type
A gunshot or spent bullet was responsible for more than half of the wounds suffered by the 200 soldiers that have appeared in "Faces of War," Faces of the Civil War and Faces of the Confederacy. Artillery shells and fragments of those shells caused a tenth of the reported injuries. Five wounds fall into the "Other" category, and they include being struck by a cobblestone or fence rail, saber cuts, and falling from horses. About one-third of the injuries were undisclosed. This is due to Confederate military records that lack the level of detail included in the reports of their Union counterparts.
