  Total Union death causes
The Statistical Record of the Armies of the United States by Frederick Phisterer (supplemental volume, published 1883) includes seeveral tables detailing various aspects of the federal war experience. One of the tables, Losses by Death — Surgeon-General's Report (page 69), breaks down death causes in several categories. Here is the table, visualized as a pie chart. It helps to better appreciate the extremely high rate of disease, which took the lives of six out of every ten men who perished during the war.
