Charles Weitfle, Civil War photographer

Received an email from Paul Weitfle, Jr. His great-grandfather, Charles Weitfle, was a Civil War photographer associated with the First and Third Divisions of the Union army's Sixth Corps. According to Paul, his great-grandfather, "At one time he used the White Oak Church as his gallery." Paul also added: "Many of his CDVs carry a backing that reads 'Weitfle and Wright.' He typically used a plain backdrop for portraits of officers, but used a very distinctive backdrop for enlisted men."

Paul is searching for examples of his ancestor's photographs. If you have any, please leave a comment.

I have a photo of an unidentified Civil War (I presume) soldier with the back side marked "WEITFLE & WRIGHT, PHOTOGRAPHERS, 1st Div., 6th Corps." I'd like to get more information about it.

For Paul Weitfle Jr.
My name is Jason Wyatt and I am the Senior Preparator at the Newark Museum in Newark, NJ. While I have been re-accessioning a photo album we recieved in 1921 from an important Newark family I have come accross three photo's by your great grandfather. Two are portraits: one of General John Sedgwick taken Marck 1, 1864 and another of a chaplain from the New Jersey volunteers. We also have a photo of Charles Weitfle's photographers tent taken March 1st, 1864 in Brandy Station, Virginia.
